Killed by Methadone and the Doctor who gave it to him.
This Foundation is dedicated to the memory of my son who died on June 11, 2006. Our goal is to make the public aware of the dangers that are present in our daily lives. These dangers are from our own supposedly trustworthy Doctors and other Medical Personnel that so many of us put our lives in their hands everyday. There is a tremendous false sense of security that exist amongst us as we seek help and guidance with Doctors, Pharmacy's , Fire/Rescue, Emergency Medical Services, Drug Companies and Hospitals.
People are dying every day in America due to this false sense of security that exist. Are you sure that the new prescription you just received may not take your life after only a few doses? or a single dose? Can you gaurantee that the Paramedic that arrives at your house after calling 911 is truly capable and trained to give you or a family member the proper care they may require? Is the Doctor and staff prepared to handle your medical emergency at your nearest hospital? How many of us take a medication because the Doctor said we needed it. Have you ever thought, thank goodness medical personel are here to help. Have you ever just knew or felt that everything would be better once you or someone you knew arrived at the emergency room for professional care and treatment? Have you ever lost a loved one or friend and just assumed everyone did what they could to save their life? Are you really positive without a doubt that medical staff was qualified and without any other influences gave the best care and treatment. MAYBE WE NEED TO BE A LITTLE LESS TRUSTWORTHY.......YOUR LIFE MAY COUNT ON IT.
I have been in the medical field for twenty (20) years and a nurse for sixteen (16) years. Over this time I have witnessed unspeakable acts of neglect and incompentency with all levels of medical professionals. Approximately seven (7) years ago I went into respiratory and cardiac arrest after surgery ( caused by the anesthesiologist ) since that time my health has declined. This brought me to a different way of thinking and observing. Now I was on the other side of the fence, I was the patient and not playing the role as the care giver. What I had admired and respected for so many years was changing. Little by little it was becoming more apparent just how much a large number of medical professionals truly were not the best they could be. The more I experienced these situations and feelings the scarier it all became. Over time I realized I needed to be more responsible for my medical care and preceeded with caution when receiving medical treatment.
On June 11, 2006 my son, Robby Garvin died, he was 24 years old. On June 9, 2006 Robby went to his doctor and was prescribed Methadone for pain he had been having in is back. Within fourty (40) hours from taking his first dose he was dead. Nobody ever told him how dangerous this drug was, not the Doctor nor the Pharmacy. You see he trusted his Doctor and even asked the Pharmacy about this drug before filling it. Since his death I have researched Methadone because in all my years in the medical field I had never seen it or given this drug. My findings have been devastating and although I can never bring Robby back it is my goal to hopefully save someone else from the devastation and loss I live with everyday.

This foundation was started by friends shortly after Robby's death. It is our hope that we will be able to assist families in need as our funds allow us to. This is who Robby was and to continue his kindness and generosity would only be fitting to suit his memory.
